Why Central Texas Driveways Crack Before They Should
In Burnet County, a cracked driveway is rarely an asphalt problem. It's a ground problem that asphalt happens to sit on top of.

If you've owned a driveway in Burnet County for more than a few summers, you've probably watched a crack open up that wasn't there the year before. Maybe it runs along one edge, maybe it branches out from the middle like a river system on a map. The instinct is to blame the asphalt or the concrete itself, and sometimes that's fair. More often, though, the pavement did exactly what it was built to do. What moved was the ground underneath it.
The Ground Here Isn't Ordinary Dirt
Burnet County sits on the edge of the Llano Uplift, a stretch of Central Texas where ancient granite and limestone push close to the surface and the soils above them are thin. In a lot of yards you don't have to dig far before you hit rock, or you hit caliche, a hard, chalky layer of soil cemented together by calcium carbonate that leached out of the limestone above it over thousands of years. Caliche can be a decent building surface when it's dry and undisturbed. The trouble starts when water gets into it, or when it's mixed with clay, which it often is out here.
Clay soil swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries out. That swelling and shrinking isn't gentle. It can move a foundation, let alone four inches of asphalt sitting loose on top of it. When the clay under one section of a driveway swells more than the clay under the section next to it, something has to give, and it's usually the pavement, not the dirt.
A Climate Built to Make It Worse
Central Texas runs on a cycle of long dry spells broken by sudden, heavy rain. That pattern is close to the worst thing you could design for pavement longevity if you tried. During a drought, the clay dries out and pulls away from itself, opening fine cracks in the soil that can run a foot or more below grade. Then a storm comes through, and instead of running off evenly, water finds those cracks and pours straight down into them, rehydrating the clay from below far faster than normal rainfall would. The soil swells unevenly and fast, and the pavement above gets pushed and dropped in an uneven pattern rather than settling gradually.
This is also why a driveway that looked fine in June can develop a real problem by September. The crack you notice in fall is often the result of a shrink cycle from August finally showing through the surface, not damage that happened overnight.
What The Base Course Is Actually Doing
When we talk about "the base," we mean the compacted layer of material, usually crushed limestone base rock, that sits between the natural subgrade and the asphalt or concrete on top. A properly built base does two jobs at once. It spreads the weight of a vehicle out over a wider area so the soft ground underneath doesn't have to carry a concentrated load, and it creates a buffer that isn't as reactive to moisture as raw clay or caliche is on its own.
A thin base, or one that wasn't compacted properly before paving, doesn't do either job well. It flexes under weight instead of spreading it, and it lets moisture changes in the subgrade reach the surface faster. That's the difference between a driveway that develops a few hairline surface cracks after fifteen years of Texas summers, and one that alligator cracks and dips within five.
Reading The Difference
- Fine, spiderweb-style cracking on the surface with no dip or unevenness usually points to ordinary asphalt aging or UV exposure, not a base problem.
- Cracking that follows a clear line, especially along one edge or near a tree root or drainage path, often means the ground under that spot is moving differently than the ground next to it.
- Any spot where the pavement has visibly sunk, even by half an inch, means the base or subgrade underneath has lost support and settled.
- Cracks that widen noticeably between a dry August and a wet October are being driven by the clay cycle described above, not by traffic wear.
What Actually Helps
The fix for a base problem is never more asphalt on top. It's addressing what's underneath: excavating the failed section, correcting the grade so water sheds away from the structure instead of pooling against it, and rebuilding the base to the right depth and compaction before repaving. On sites with particularly reactive clay, a geotextile fabric layer between the subgrade and the base can help keep the two from mixing over time, which is part of what causes long-term base failure in the first place.
