Asphalt or Concrete: Choosing the Right Driveway for Hill Country Ground
The right material for a Central Texas driveway depends less on looks and more on what your particular piece of ground is doing.

Ask ten people whether asphalt or concrete makes a better driveway and you'll get ten confident answers, most of them based on whatever their neighbor has. The truth is more specific than that. On Hill Country ground, where grade and drainage vary wildly from one lot to the next, the right answer depends on your particular site more than it depends on general preference.
Start With The Grade
A flat, level driveway gives you more flexibility with either material. A steep one narrows the choice fast. Asphalt handles minor ground movement better than concrete because it has more flex in it, which matters on a sloped driveway where the real issue isn't frost heave so much as clay movement and erosion along the edges. Concrete, on the other hand, can be finished with a broomed texture that grips better underfoot and under tire on a steep grade than smooth asphalt does, which is a real safety consideration if your driveway drops sharply from the road.

Drainage Decides More Than People Expect
Water that's allowed to pool against or under a driveway is the single biggest cause of early failure in either material, but the two handle standing water differently. Asphalt is more forgiving of minor surface ponding because it's slightly porous and flexible, though it still needs a proper crown and edge drainage to last. Concrete is less forgiving; standing water that gets under a slab through a cracked joint can undermine the base faster than the same amount of water would under asphalt, because concrete won't flex to accommodate the shift.
Given how the flash flood pattern here works, drainage design usually matters more to your driveway's lifespan than which material sits on top of it. We grade and drain every job the same way regardless of surface, but it's worth knowing that a badly drained concrete driveway will show problems sooner than a badly drained asphalt one.
How You Use It
A driveway that only ever sees two cars and the occasional delivery truck has different demands than one that regularly takes a loaded trailer, an RV, or heavy equipment. Concrete generally handles sustained heavy point loads, like a parked RV, better over time than asphalt does, which can develop a slight depression under a fixed heavy load left in one spot for long stretches. If you're routinely bringing a boat trailer or a work truck up the drive, that's worth mentioning when we come out, because it changes the base design more than it changes the surface choice.
Cost, Timeline, and Upkeep
Asphalt generally costs less to install and can be driven on again within a day or two of paving. Concrete costs more up front and needs longer to cure, often close to a week before it should take regular traffic, but it typically goes longer between the kind of maintenance asphalt needs. Asphalt wants sealcoating every few years to slow UV and water damage, as we've covered elsewhere; concrete doesn't need sealing on the same schedule, though joints should be checked and re-caulked periodically to keep water out of them.
Repairs look different too. A well-matched asphalt patch blends in reasonably well after a season of weathering. A concrete patch, unless it's a full slab replacement, almost always reads as a visible patch, because getting a new pour to match the color and texture of an aged slab exactly is difficult. If you think you'll need occasional small repairs over the years and don't want them to stand out, that's a point in asphalt's favor.
There's No Wrong Answer, Only The Wrong Fit
Plenty of Hill Country homes have a long, gently sloped asphalt driveway that's held up for decades, and plenty have a concrete drive that's done the same. What actually causes problems is picking a material without accounting for the specific grade, drainage, and use of that particular piece of ground.
